The Problem & Our Solution
The Central San Joaquin Valley has lost more than two centuries of native habitat to agriculture and urban development. The land that remains—and the communities that depend on it—face mounting pressure from groundwater depletion, poor air and water quality, increasing wildfire and flood risk, and the accelerating effects of climate change.
For the first time, a single regional plan exists to address all of it.
The Ecosystem Restoration Plan for the Central San Joaquin Valley is a comprehensive ecosystem restoration plan developed by Sequoia Riverlands Trust in partnership with the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara. Grounded in science, shaped by community, and built for action, this plan identifies where restoration is needed most, what restoration looks like in practice, and how anyone with a stake in this region can get involved.

It aligns local and regional priorities with statewide conservation goals, identifies where restoration can have the greatest ecological and community benefit, and provides practical guidance for anyone ready to act.
The plan was developed through a months-long process of community engagement, scientific analysis, and collaboration with more than a hundred partners, community members, tribal representatives, landowners, farmworkers, water managers, and restoration practitioners from across the four-county region.
