EARTH Academy summer session

September 22, 2022 by Aaron

By Sneha Kumar

This summer, high school students from across Tulare County joined Sequoia Riverlands Trust's Summer EARTH Academy.

For two weeks, these students - referred to as EARTH Technicians - learned about ecology, soil health, and land management at SRT's Kaweah Oaks Preserve and Dry Creek Preserve.

Technicians learned how to identify native plants and animals, and shared their observations through Citizen Science apps like eBird and iNaturalist. They also took some time to reflect on their experiences and connections to the natural world through nature journaling.

At the end of both weeks, Technicians traveled into the Sierra Nevada to spend a day at Sequoia Lake YMCA Camp, run by the Golden State YMCA. There, Technicians put their problem solving skills to use working through various team-building activities and puzzles, challenged themselves to overcome their fears on the high ropes course, and enjoyed some beautiful weather out on the water.

SRT would like to thank all the Technicians for participating in our summer program, and send a special thanks to the YMCA Camp at Sequoia Lake for allowing us access to their amenities! We had a great summer, and are looking forward to another great year of EARTH Academy starting in the Fall!
