Spring events coming soon

January 23, 2017 by Diane

It's been a rainy, dreary winter so far (but yay for rain!), however, spring is just around the corner and SRT has events on the horizon you won't want to miss - especially if you like wildflowers (and who doesn't?).

On Saturday, February 25, the annual Lewis Hill Wildflower Walk and kite flying event will take place at Lewis Hill Preserve, near Porterville. From 9 a.m. until noon we'll hike up the hill, learning about the beautiful wildflowers from the National Forest Service's Fletcher Linton. We expect the rare Striped Adobe Lily will be in full bloom for this event. After the hike, fly a kite on the hill and enjoy the views. Cost: $10 for SRT members, $15 for nonmembers, $5 for students, and kids 12 and under can attend for free.

Our Herbert Preserve, also rarely open to the public, will have its own wildflower walk on Saturday, March 18, starting at 9 a.m., with ecologist Bobby Kamansky and biologist John Keeley leading the way. We'll not only see pretty flowers, but Herbert's vernal pools and the many birds they attract. Cost is the same as the Lewis Hill Walk.

And of course we'll have our usual volunteer days at Dry Creek Preserve, Kaweah Oaks Preserve work days, and First Saturday Open Days at Blue Oak Ranch Preserve. All are beautiful in the spring, as is Homer Ranch, which is open on weekends until about June 1. Winter showers bring wildflowers, and that is why we love them!
