SUMMARY:Walk the Wetlands: James K. Herbert Preserve (Open One Day Only)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 28 | 9:00 AM–1:00 PM (last entry at 12:00 PM)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStep into a rare wetland prairie landscape—open to the public just one day a year. RSVP required. Suggested donations support long-term protection of this special place. \n\n\n\nFor one day each year\, the gates open at the James K. Herbert Wetland Prairie Preserve—725 acres of protected wetland prairie habitat in the heart of Tulare County. \n\n\n\nWalk the Wetlands is a spring tradition built for curiosity and quiet wonder. Expect open skies\, seasonal wildflowers\, and the chance to spot birds and wildlife that depend on this rare landscape. Seasonal wetlands may be present depending on rainfall\, but the preserve is remarkable in every kind of year—alive with color\, movement\, and the rhythms of a place shaped by wet and dry cycles. \n\n\n\nGuests will check in\, receive a brief orientation\, and be guided to a starting point by an expert before exploring at your own pace. This is a lightly guided\, mostly self-directed experience designed to help visitors notice what’s often missed: the hidden life in a wetland prairie\, the beauty of native plants\, and the importance of protecting a habitat that has nearly disappeared from the San Joaquin Valley. \n\n\n\nRSVP required. Capacity is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Herbert Preserve Matters\n\n\n\nHerbert Preserve protects something that almost no longer exists. This 725-acre preserve safeguards one of the largest remaining wetland prairie habitats in the San Joaquin Valley—a landscape that once stretched across the region but has nearly disappeared. Here\, vernal pools may form with winter rains\, wildflowers bloom in brilliant circles in spring\, and migratory birds find refuge along their long journeys. Herbert is proof that agriculture and wildlife can coexist\, and that thoughtful stewardship can restore what was nearly lost. In a region defined by working lands and water challenges\, Herbert stands as both refuge and reminder: these ecosystems are rare\, resilient\, and worth protecting for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\n\n\n\n\nCheck-in and brief orientation\n\n\n\nShort guided walk to a starting point with an expert\n\n\n\nSelf-guided exploration afterward\n\n\n\nSpring wildflowers and wetland prairie habitat\n\n\n\nSeasonal wetlands may be present depending on rainfall\n\n\n\nRestrooms available on site\n\n\n\nParking is limited (carpooling encouraged)\n\n\n\n\nDirections to Herbert Preserve can be found here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome Prepared\n\n\n\n\nUneven footing throughout the trail\n\n\n\nBoots or sturdy hiking shoes strongly recommended\n\n\n\nBring water and sun protection\n\n\n\nStay on designated trails\n\n\n\nFollow Leave No Trace principles to protect sensitive plant life\n\n\n\n\nPreparation helps ensure a safe experience for both visitors and the land. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP & Attendance Details\n\n\n\nAttendance is limited to protect the preserve. RSVP is required. \n\n\n\n\nCapacity is capped at 150 guests\n\n\n\nParking is limited; carpooling is strongly encouraged\n\n\n\nAdditional parking information will be shared closer to the event\n\n\n\n\nDirections to Herbert Preserve can be found here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost & Donations\n\n\n\nAdmission is free. This preserve is protected year-round long after the gates close. Suggested donations of $20 per adult and $5 per youth help keep habitat healthy\, support wildlife\, and make this once-a-year opening possible. Donations can be made when RSVPing or on-site. Donations accepted via cash\, check\, or card. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStewardship Comes First\n\n\n\nAccess to Herbert Preserve is possible because protection remains the priority. Visitors are asked to tread lightly\, respect posted guidance\, and help ensure this rare landscape remains intact for the species that depend on it—and for future generations to experience responsibly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n	Tickets\n\n \n	\n	\n The numbers below include tickets for this event already in your cart. Clicking "Get Tickets" will allow you to edit any existing attendee information as well as change ticket quantities.	\n\n\n \n \n \n	\n Tickets are no longer available	\n\n\n \n	\n	\n\n	\n	\n\n	\n	\n\n\n\n \n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\nClick on a dropdown arrow to read more. \n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\nThe preserve does not have a street address. The entrance gate is located at the intersection of Tulare-Lindsay Highway (Highway 137) and Farmersville Boulevard. Please navigate directly to this map pin. Event signage will be posted at the entrance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo I need to RSVP?\nYes. RSVP is required to help protect sensitive habitat and manage parking. Space is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow long is the event?\nThe preserve will be open from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM\, with last entry at 12:00 PM. There is no formal start time—you may arrive anytime between 9:00 AM and noon. Most visits last 1–2 hours depending on your pace and how long you spend exploring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs there an entry fee?\nThere is no required entry fee. A suggested donation of $20 per adult and $5 per youth helps protect the preserve and support conservation and environmental education across the region. Donations can be made during RSVP or on site via cash\, check\, or card. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow difficult is the walk?\nTerrain is natural and semi-rugged\, with uneven ground and no paved or maintained trails. There is little to no elevation gain\, but sturdy footwear is strongly recommended. After check-in\, visitors will be guided to a starting point by an expert\, then invited to explore at their own pace. Staff and volunteers will be present throughout the preserve to offer guidance and answer questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill there be vernal pools?\nSeasonal wetlands may be present depending on rainfall. In wetter years\, vernal pools can form and bloom with striking wildflower displays. In drier years\, the preserve remains a remarkable wetland prairie landscape with unique plants\, birds\, and wildlife to observe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre there bathrooms onsite?\nYes. Portable restrooms will be available. There is no running water on site\, but limited drinking water will be available to refill bottles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat should I bring?\n\nSturdy closed-toe shoes or boots\n\n\n\nWater (refillable bottle recommended)\n\n\n\nSun protection (hat\, sunscreen)\n\n\n\nLayers (spring weather can shift quickly)\n\n\n\nBinoculars or a camera if you have them\n\n\n\nTrekking poles can also be helpful for uneven ground\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIs this event family-friendly?\nYes. Curious learners of all ages are welcome. Please note that terrain is natural and may not be suitable for strollers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre pets allowed?\nPets are not permitted. SUMMARY:Wildflower Walk at Lewis Hill Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Step into a landscape rarely seen.\n\n\nFor one day each year\, access is granted to Lewis Hill Preserve—a protected site normally closed to the public and home to rare plants\, unique geology\, and thriving wildlife. This self-guided hike offers a chance to explore rolling hills alive with seasonal wildflowers\, learn from experts stationed along the trail\, and experience a place shaped by stewardship and care. \nLewis Hill does not have an address. Click here for directions. \n \nWhy Lewis Hill Matters\nLewis Hill is one of the few places where the Striped Adobe Lily\, a threatened wildflower\, continues to survive. This tiny bloom depends on the preserve’s unusual serpentine soils—rocky\, mineral-rich terrain that supports plant and animal life found almost nowhere else. Along the trail\, sweeping wildflower displays\, burrowing owls\, and a variety of bird species reveal how geology and biology intersect in this sensitive habitat. \n \nWhat to Expect\nThis is a moderate hike over uneven terrain and natural surfaces. The experience is self-guided\, allowing exploration at a personal pace with staffed stations along the route focused on geology\, birding\, and wildflowers. At the top\, kite flying adds a moment of lightness and joy before heading back down. \n \nCome Prepared\n\nUneven footing throughout the trail\nBoots or sturdy hiking shoes strongly recommended\nBring water and sun protection\nStay on designated trails\nFollow Leave No Trace principles to protect sensitive plant life\n\nPreparation helps ensure a safe experience for both visitors and the land. \n \nRSVP & Attendance Details\nAttendance is limited to protect the preserve. RSVP is required. No walk-ups will be accepted. \n\nCapacity is capped at 250 guests\nParking is limited; carpooling is strongly encouraged\nAdditional parking information will be shared closer to the event\n\nLewis Hill does not have an address. Click here for directions. \n \nCost & Donations\nThis event is free to attend. A minimum donation of $20 per person is recommended to support habitat protection\, stewardship\, and the continued care of Lewis Hill. Donations will be accepted on-site via cash\, check\, or card. \n \nStewardship Comes First\nAccess to Lewis Hill is possible because protection remains the priority. Visitors are asked to tread lightly\, respect posted guidance\, and help ensure this rare landscape remains intact for the species that depend on it—and for future generations to experience responsibly.
