Be a Nature Day Speaker!
Teach the Public about Nature, Sustainability, and Environmental Awareness
Speakers Needed for June, July & August 2010
Do you have a special area of interest that relates to nature, sustainability, environmental awareness, or conservation? Would you like to share your knowledge with others?
One to three times per month, SRT hosts Nature Day events that teach the public about these subjects. The purpose of these events is to increase public access to environmental education and build awareness about the relationship between our community and the natural world.
All range of topics can be covered by a Nature Day, but here are few sample ideas:
- Eco-art projects that use recycled materials
- Wildflowers
- Water conservation issues
- Geology of the San Joaquin Valley & Sierra
- Kids' bird watching
- Field drawing and sketching
- Insect identification
- Permaculture
- Renewable energy
Nature Day Speakers are responsible for:
- creating the content for their Nature Day event
- teaching the participants about the subject they have chosen
- being the principal group leader during the event
A SRT staff person will attend your Nature Day event and provide support for you during the event. We will help park cars, keep track of everyone, and help in any other way needed. Typically, the SRT staff person will introduce the speaker and speak briefly about our organization. Then, we will turn over the event to you.
Nature Day events typically take place on a weekend or on a weekday evening. They usually last 1 - 4 hours. They can take place on one of SRT's six nature preserves or indoors. Attendance ranges from just 3 people to as many as 75 people, depending on public interest and maximum capacity for the event. Nature Days are open to all economic levels. While a donation is recommended to fund SRT's time spent planning the events, it is not required of those in need.
How to sign up:
1. Brainstorm the topic you would like to cover with your Nature Day event
2. Write a description of the event's (a) topic, (b) expected duration, (c) desired location, (d) desired event date, (e) agenda of the day's activities, (f) support needed from SRT

Environmental Education Curriculum Writers, Reviewers, & Dreamers
Help SRT write, dream up, and review EE curriculum for Pro Youth/HEART after school teachers - Volunteers Needed in June & July 2010
This is the chance to REALLY make a difference in our education system! If you think that children should learn more about the environment, nature, and conservation in their classroom, this is the volunteer position for you.
Designing & Dreaming Up Curriculum
As a volunteer, you will help me dream up different ways to teach kids about the environment. This process is a lot of fun because you can be as creative as you like. Whether you are artsy, scientific, or mathematical, there are many different ways or learning about the environment. Our job will be to find the best, most effective ways that we think kids will learn about nature.
After we hammer out some lesson plans, I need someone to review them and make sure they make sense. A second or third pair of eyes is tremendously helpful.
The Teacher Training in July
I am going to be leading a series of workshops for 200 Pro Youth/HEART after school teachers that focuses on Environmental Education curriculum. I need people who have a knowledge of children and/or classroom dynamics to help me create EE curriculum for the teachers to use.
The curriculum will focus on environmental issues and resources that are relevant to our region. It needs to be very user-friendly so that teachers can reach into our curriculum packet and pull out a ready-to-use lesson plan.
How to Sign Up
Please contact me, Laura Childers, at (559) 738-0211 x103 or laura@sequoiariverlands.org. We will discuss the ways that you can participate in this project.

Volunteers have done everything from controlled burns to plant propagation to irrigation repair. Whatever your abilities, there is sure to be a place for you here.
Where & When
This position is on-going, and the hours are variable. Work will be based at the native plant nursery at the Dry Creek Preserve near Lemon Cove, but it may also extend to other preserves. When you join the team, you will periodically be notified by phone or email when help is needed.

City Planning & Resource Management Advisor
Identify Mitigation Projects & Help Us Conserve More Land
SRT would like experienced people with a background in city planning or resource management to team up with us and identify potential mitigation projects. We would prefer volunteers to be actively involved in these activities and have the pulse on development in this region.

Graphic Designer Needed
Make a promotional document that will help our Environmental Education Program!
If you have computer skills and are interested in promoting our Environmental Education Program, this might be the spot for you! We need a nice tri-fold that highlights all of the educational activities that SRT offers. Can you put a nice pamphlet together?
Why We Need a Pamphlet
The pamphlet will help us get more people involved in our education program. I often do public outreach at events and run into people who are curious about SRT's Environmental Education Program in particular because they have children or they are involved in education. It is important to have a take-away document that they can refer to later so that they remember us and have our contact information.
Skills You Need to Have
You need to already know how to create and design a tri-fold. You need to know about the software necessary to design one.
How to Sign Up
1. Contact Laura Childers if you are interested. See below for my information.
2. We will set up a meeting to discuss the education program, what needs to be included in the pamphlet, and how to use our computer system.
3. You can work on the pamphlet here or at home.
4. Submit a draft to me, and we will review it.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Laura Childers at laura@sequoiariverlands.org or (559) 738-0211 x103.
