Sequoia Riverlands Trust (SRT) is a regional, non-profit Central California land trust dedicated to conserving the natural and agricultural legacy of the southern Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley. The wealth, productivity and beauty of this land inspire our work to conserve it for the prosperity and enjoyment of future generations.
Our mission is to protect working landscapes, wildlife habitat and scenic open spaces, while ensuring that economic growth in our communities remains vibrant and sustainable.
To accomplish this, SRT engages landowners, farmers, conservationists and business partners in the counties of Tulare, Fresno, Kern and Kings to collaborate on behalf of Central Valley California heartland with land conservation.
To date, Sequoia Riverlands Trust has protected more than 10,000 acres. SRT owns and manages six nature preserves that protect 4,069 acres of remnant landscapes, woodland communities and wildlife habitat. And SRT holds conservation easements on 15 properties, totaling 2,714 more acres of protected land. SRT has also collaborated with agencies, other non-profit conservation organizations and landowners to protect 3,811 additional acres.
Our six program areas are:
Farmland protection — SRT works with farmers who are interested in bolstering their business operations while safeguarding the San Joaquin Valley’s rich agricultural productivity
Plum orchard in bloom,
Fresno County
Habitat protection — SRT works with willing landowners on conservation easements and other forms of land protection to conserve strategic private properties in the southern Sierra Nevada characterized by their essential habitat for native species, scenic open space, agricultural productivity and/or watershed values
Land stewardship — SRT uses the best available science to enhance and restore the southern Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley to its healthiest state, and then continues monitoring and maintenance of the land to ensure its continued vitality
Environmental education — SRT offers standards-based school tours of conserved land to elementary school groups, service learning opportunities for all ages, and special monthly walks and presentations for the general public
Community outreach — SRT regularly engages the public in a variety of interactive and informative settings to teach the value of land conservation and to promote sustainable land use planning practices in California
Collaboration — SRT engages with a diverse community of interested conservationists, from Southern California Edison to the Tulare County Office of Education to the American Farmland Trust in order to accomplish our conservation mission
